The Foundation

The Spanish Railways Foundation is a Public Sector Foundation of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility created in 1985.

Its mission and objectives are to promote knowledge and use of the railway through actions aimed at the service of citizens: cultural, research and training, technological, conservation, recovery and alternative use of railway cultural heritage, periodicals and specialised books, as well as through the management and conservation of the Railway Museums of Madrid and Catalonia and their documentary heritage by means of the Library Railway and the Railway Historical Archive. In relation to preserving heritage, one of its activities is carried out by the Greenways Management, which has been promoting and boosting the Greenways Program at the national level since 1993, jointly commissioned by the then Ministry of Public Works, Transport and the Environment, Renfe and Feve, creators of this Program more than 30 years ago.

What do we do?

A lot of things! And we are organised as follows:

Studies and Engineering Section

We are in charge of drafting identification studies, feasibility studies and construction projects commissioned by public administrations for the recovery of old railway routes as greenways.

Since 1993, more than 100 studies and construction projects for greenways have been drafted. If you are an administration and you need an evaluated report, an identification, feasibility or construction study, do not hesitate. Contact us and we will advise you.

We also maintain timely institutional relations on technical issues with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Adif and other public entities involved in the development of these projects.

In addition, we manage a Geographic Information System regarding the old railways and greenways, permanently expanding and updating such content for our own information platforms and channels: websites, App, publications, etc., as well as external ones: Official Road Map of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Leisure and Nature Map of IGN-CNIG or the more recent national viewer of cycling routes implemented by MITMOS within the framework of the State Strategy for the Bicycle.

One of the latest lines of work that we are developing is the management of MITMOS grants for promoting the use of bicycles through investment in cycling infrastructure. Are you interested? Here you have more Info >>

Promotion and Communication Section

We are in charge of the promotion, dissemination and communication of the Greenways Programme, as well as institutional relations with the various levels of the public administration, tourism departments, companies and groups in order disseminate this network of non-motorised itineraries that are the Greenways.

We collaborate non-stop with the media and agents to get this information to the public.

Our many activities include the development and maintenance of the www.viasverdes.com website you are visiting; the organization of seminars, conferences, forums, webinars, etc.; attendance at international tourism fairs such as FITUR, Fiets & Wandelbeurs and others; the organisation of the National Greenways Day, the management of social networks, the publication of a monthly newsletter, the editing of videos, podcasts, brochures, publications... the production a few years ago of the TV series "Vive la Vía" and all those activities that help to promote and boost the Greenways Program!

We are also in charge of carrying out plans for the promotion of greenways at the destination, management of national and European projects thanks to agreements, subsidies and sponsorships from the European Commission, national and regional public and private entities.

So if you want us to help you position your Greenway, count on us!

At the international level, we annually develop an Action Plan for promotion abroad in collaboration with Turespaña and we hold the General Secretariat of the European Greenways Association to continue defending this idea within Europe.
