Dénia Greenway Nature Trail
Route Description
Denia Greenway. The Dénia Greenway begins in the north of the town, connected to the town centre by a bike path that starts at the foot of the castle. From the CV 723 road we take a detour parallel to a nursery, at the point where a sign indicates: "Vía Verde Dénia-El Verger." After 160 m we come to the start of the greenway.
An itinerary surrounded by orange, carob and almond trees...
At km 0 there is a rest area. The greenway begins its journey surrounded by orange, carob and almond trees. It crosses a drainage channel and the Morxama ravine on wooden walkways. Then a colourful path with palm trees crosses the road to a country house.
In the second rest area (km 1.1) we find a panel devoted to the history of the old railway with interesting photos of different models of train engines. We continue on. Above the medium-sized canopies of the fruit tree, haughty pines from the stately estates stand out on the left side of the road.
The greenway crosses, at ground level, asphalted rural roads, which can take us to the beach if we take them to the right. At one of these crossroads there is an old guard box (km 1.7), in which the blurred plaque that used to indicate km 61.86 can still be seen.
A new wooden footbridge allows us to cross the ravine of l'Alter (km 2.3) and raise our eyes over the agricultural landscape that surrounds the route: on the left rises the tall chimney of an oven, once used to dry grapes and turn them into raisins; and behind you can see a view of Dénia Castle and the imposing silhouette of the massif of the Montgó Nature Reserve, which rises from the sea up to a height of 751m.
The rest area and the Palmar Halt (km. 3) appear after the overpass of a road. The halt, which has been restored, is a magnificent, covered refuge at the midpoint of the route. An information panel details the harshness involved in driving the line's old steam engines, featuring a train driver’s experiences. The human aspect of the railway and train passengers in the 1940s-1960s are also described.
From the fourth rest area (km 3.7) the greenway advances with the view of the Sierra Segaria dominating the horizon in the background. The metal footbridge over the Alberca River (km 4.4), on its original stone abutments, crosses through one of the most evocative settings of the entire route
After the river there begins a section shared with vehicles. A panel located next to the bridge describes the flora and fauna of the landscape. In the rest area of km 5.8 the Dénia Greenway comes to an end. A large information panel at the end of the route explains the connection with the Safor Greenway through the Marjal Nature Reserve.
Continuation of the route along the Safor Greenway (Oliva-Gandía)
If we continue along the route of the old railway, converted into an asphalt road, we reach El Verger in 1 km, where we find the old station after crossing the bridge over the Girona River.
A pleasant walk from El Verger through the Marjal de Pego-Oliva Nature Reserve, offers us the possibility of reaching the town of Oliva and connecting with the other restored section of the old Dénia-Carcaixent railway line: the Safor Greenway. The route is completely flat along a bike path and rural roads in the Marjal with little traffic. It is made up of 35 km of flat terrain.
From the old train station we cross the town of El Verger that thereafter leads to a roundabout on Avenida de Valencia. At this roundabout, all traces of the railway disappear as we travel along the bike lane that runs parallel to the road to Pego. After passing an elevated bridge over the motorway and then a petrol station, we come to long straight stretch from where we can see the town centre of Pego.
We leave the bike lane at a sign on the right, cross the road and take dirt track to enter the nature reserve. We have to continue parallel to a canal for 400 m to be able to cross it later over a bridge.
The pleasant trip through La Marjal ends when we cross the footbridge over the floodgates of the Bullent River, arriving at Font Salada, a natural pool of thermal waters with renowned health benefits, in 400 m. The route continues along rural roads to the town of Oliva, which we cross from south to north. Halfway along the urban route we link up with a bike lane that takes us directly to the starting point of the Safor Greenway towards Gandía. In this way, from Dénia to Gandía we can complete a route of almost 50 km.
