Carrilet Girona - Sant Feliu de Guíxols Greenway Nature Trail
Historia del Ferrocarril
This small railroad’s distinctive features included its peculiar gauge: it was the first Spanish railway with a track gauge of 75 centimetres. After many discussions about its gauge and its final layout, is was the determination of Sant Feliu’s residents that led to the start of this “carrilet,” known affectionately in the area as the "Feliuet," in 1892. At that time, the province of Girona witnessed a boom of “carrilets” that, centred on the capital, reached as far as Olot, Banyoles, Palamós and Sant Feliu.
Its modest existence featured moments of great splendour, especially in the post-war period, when, due to the lack of road transport, it experienced its best figures for passengers and goods. Among its railway loads, it is especially worth mentioning the traffic of cork sheets and stoppers, with important transformation centres in the factories of Cassà de la Selva and Llagostera.
As on so many occasions, the loss of traffic meant that the railway company was forced to cede its concession to the State in 1963, which went on to integrate it into the services attached to FEVE. And the new managers expressed a strong commitment to its development, emphasizing its connection with the Olot “carrilet,” which located nearby in Girona Station. This would be possible by adapting it to the Olot railway’s metric gauge as well as renewing its rolling stock. If this commitment had gone ahead, it would have resulted in a metre-gauge commuter network that could have reached our days. Unfortunately, nothing was carried out and, in 1969, this entire Girona rural network was closed and dismantled shortly thereafter.
