Mazarrón Greenway

History of the Railway

This railway had the same historical evolution as the one that forms the basis of the route of the Campo de Cartagena Greenway, which was built by the State in the 1920s to complete the national network that suffered from a design that was too radial.

This initiative could not be handled by the railway entrepreneurs and this led to the famous Guadalhorce Plan, thus giving rise to new projects such as this railway that was built under the said plan.

The project was planned to reach Águilas and, from there, to establish a way to Andalusia. Finally, it was decided to abort the project in order to create a connection with the existing network in Totana, abandoning the construction very early on, when levelling work had already been as far as the vicinity of Mazarrón.
